Overview
The Xinle Site is a significant Neolithic settlement located in modern-day Shenyang, Liaoning province, China. Dating back over 7,000 years, the site provides valuable insights into the life and culture of ancient societies that thrived in the region. Spanning 178,000 square meters, it has yielded more than 3,000 artifacts and 40 house foundations through extensive archaeological excavations. The site offers a window into the past, allowing heritage professionals to reconstruct the lives and activities of its ancient inhabitants.
Archaeological Discoveries
The discoveries at the Xinle Site are remarkable, encompassing a wide array of artifacts that include pottery vessels, stone tools, and evidence of ancient dwellings. Among the most notable finds is a carbonized wooden pole featuring a bird's head carving and intricate double-faced carvings on its body. This artifact, thought to be a tribal leader's scepter, represents one of the earliest examples of wooden carving in China. Despite its fragmentation during excavation, it remains a precious testament to the skill and artistry of the Xinle people.
The site has also revealed artifacts crafted from jet, a compact coal known for its deep black color and suitability for jewelry making. These items, shaped into balls, earrings, and bubbles, are believed to have originated from coalfields in Fushun, Liaoning province. The proximity of Fushun to the Hunhe River suggests that the materials may have been transported downstream or exchanged among ancient communities.
Xinle Site Museum
The Xinle Site Museum, established in the mid-1980s, plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting the significance of the site. The museum is currently undergoing upgrades to transform into an archaeological ruins park, enhancing its educational and interpretive capabilities. Visitors can explore areas where artifacts were discovered and experience re-creations of clan meetings, hunting practices, and tool-making activities.
